Campus hostel versus PG
Campus hostels are more structured: fixed mess, known rules, and proximity to class. They can fill early in popular programmes, so timing matters.
Paying guest (PG) options vary widely. Ask about mess quality, curfew, visitor rules, roommate gender policies, distance and night travel safety, and whether rent is monthly or with a large advance.
For first-year students especially, a clear hostel plan reduces panic in week one. If hostel is unavailable, get a shortlist of PGs near campus with travel time stated in minutes, not “nearby.”
Questions families should ask before locking housing
What is included in rent (electricity, water, Wi-Fi, food)? What is extra?
Who holds the keys on arrival day, and what ID is needed? Is there a warden or manager phone that parents can save?
How do students from other states usually settle in? Is there a buddy, senior, or campus office for first-week help?
